Researching her graduation thesis – on cinema violence – Angela’s character at once occupies a morally motivated high ground. That plateau from which many of us lay our scorn, those who admit to it at least, toward that which we find impossible not to at least glimpse at; as we peek into the car wreckage and the celebrity open coffin.

Thesis fantastically portrays this in its opening act, in which Angela cannot resist the urge to glance at a suicide victim as he sprawls beneath a train in full public display. This is a reflex that is again displayed when she uncovers a videotape that contains the graphic torture and mutilation of a young ex-student. Angela forces herself to turn away but drinks in the audio as if it were visual...
